$734M in bonds heading to November

Two large asks are forming up for Mesa voters on the November 3 general-election ballot: a $285M city general-obligation bond from City Hall and a $449M school bond from Mesa Public Schools.

Key facts:

  • City bond: $285M split into two questions. One funds public safety (fire and medical, police, communications, facilities, and equipment). The other funds streets and municipal improvements.
  • City bond next step: Council votes June 1 on the resolution calling the special bond election (matter 26-0537). Mayor Mark Freeman and Councilmember Lance Webb are leading the push.
  • MPS bond: $449M, the first piece of an estimated $1.4 billion in district capital needs identified by Superintendent Dr. Matt Strom and Board President Tyler Moore.
  • Both items would appear together on the same November 3 ballot.

This is a big civic moment for the city. The city bond and the MPS bond would arrive at voters' doors at the same time, and both organizations will spend the summer making the case for their respective asks. Tribune coverage for the city bond and the MPS bond.

What to watch: the June 1 council meeting, when the formal resolution calling the city's bond election is on the agenda.
